Lo avrete forse già sentito, ma vale la pena ribadire. Mercoledì scorso, durante la cerimonia per gli awards assegnati dalla Jazz Journalist Association (svoltasi al Blue Note di New York),  Sonny Rollins ha fatto incetta, portandosi a casa ben 3 statuette: musicista dell’anno, miglior sassofonista tenore e e disco dell’anno (per ‘Road Shows Vol. 2′).

Il musicista, che non ha potuto presenziare alla premiazione (non vorrei dir castronerie, ma suppongo sia già impegnato nel tour che lo porterà anche al nostro Umbria Jazz), ha scritto di suo pugno un comunicato di ringraziamento: “Sono nato con un dono, e per questo sono molto riconoscente. Ho copiato ed imparato dai miei predecessori, ai quali sono molto grato. E con la medesima gratitudine accetto oggi questo premio”.

Le premiazioni hanno anche confermato l’ascesa di “giovani leoni” che a noi piacciono tanto come Ambrose Akinmusire e Ben Williams (rispettivamente nelle categorie miglior trombettista e miglior emergente), ma hanno anche reso il giusto riconoscimento a un altro grande mai troppo celebrato: Horace Silver, che si è portato a casa la statuetta per il “Lifetime achievement in jazz”.
